Note

Description

ESFSJU Abundant moisture, along with a series of troughs, will continue to enhance the potential for showers and thunderstorms today, and stretching into at least Thursday. At this time, USGS river sensors indicate that most streams are running normal to much above normal, and soils are saturated along eastern, interior and western Puerto Rico. Some rivers reached action to minor flood stage with yesterday's heavy rains. Additionally, winds are expected to be weak through much of this period, so any rainfall activity that develops will be long-lasting. In general, we are expecting additional rainfall accumulation of 2 to 4 inches each day, with the heaviest accumulation along the interior, north and western Puerto Rico. However, periods of heavy rain will also reach the Virgin Islands and eastern Puerto Rico, including the San Juan metropolitan area, too. There is an elevated risk of flooding each day through Thursday. The likelihood of urban and small stream flooding, mudslides and rapid river rises will increase, and there is a chance of isolated flash flooding as well. There is some uncertainty in the location and timing of this rain, as well as how much cloud coverage will limit the development of afternoon showers and thunderstorms. However, there is a high confidence on a wet and unsettled period for Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands and local waters. Conditions are expected to improve next Saturday, May 3rd, but changes in the forecast are likely before then. Please stay tuned for further updates. This product will be updated if necessary.
