Areas

Note

Non-Weather Emergency Message. Not sent to IPAWS.

Description

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources has issued an Air Quality Advisory for the following counties: Barron, Chippewa, Dunn, Eau Claire, Pepin, Pierce, Polk, Rusk, and St. Croix. WHAT...The PM2.5 AQI is expected to reach the Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups to Unhealthy level. WHERE...All of Wisconsin. WHEN...Until noon Saturday, August 2.

Instruction

Sensitive groups: Consider rescheduling or moving all activities inside. Go inside if you have symptoms. People with asthma: Follow your asthma action plan and keep quick-relief medicine handy. People with heart disease: Symptoms such as palpitations, shortness of breath, or unusual fatigue may indicate a serious problem. If you have any of these, contact your health care provider. Everyone else: Keep outdoor activities shorter and less intense. Go inside if you have symptoms. Additional Details: Canadian wildfire smoke will continue to impact Wisconsin`s surface air quality over the next several days. Conditions have improved since Thursday as a pocket of cleaner air has infiltrated the widespread blanket of dense smoke across eastern Wisconsin. However, a mix of Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups (USG; Orange) AQI and Unhealthy (Red) AQI is still expected today, with locations farther north more likely to see heavier smoke. Continued gradual improvement is currently anticipated heading into the weekend, but USG (Orange) AQI to Unhealthy (Red) AQI will remain possible. Conditions will continue to be reevaluated on a day-to-day basis, including updates to the forecast and any associated Air Quality Advisories. For more information on current air quality, please see: https://airquality.wi.gov

Description

* WHAT...The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency has issued an Air Quality Alert for fine particles pollution. The Air Quality Index (AQI) is expected to reach the Red or Unhealthy category. * WHERE...West central, east central, central, south central, southeast, north central, northwest, southwest, and northeast Minnesota. * WHEN...Until 5 PM CDT Saturday. * IMPACTS...Some members of the general public may experience health effects. Sensitive groups, such as people with lung disease (including asthma), heart disease, and children and older adults, may experience health effects. * ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Northerly winds will continue transporting waves of heavy surface smoke from wildfires across Manitoba and Saskatchewan into Minnesota. Smoke will move south across all of Minnesota and linger through Saturday afternoon. The smoke will be reinforced by an area of high pressure that will create light winds and limit the dispersion of smoke. Therefore the air quality alert has been expanded to include all of Minnesota and extended until Saturday afternoon when the air quality is forecasted to improve.

Instruction

Sensitive groups, such as people with lung disease (including asthma), heart disease, and children and older adults, should avoid prolonged or heavy exertion. The general public should limit prolonged or heavy exertion. Reduce or eliminate activities that contribute to air pollution, such as outdoor burning, and use of residential wood burning devices. Reduce vehicle trips and vehicle idling as much as possible. Keep windows closed overnight to prevent smoke from getting indoors.

The Air Quality Index (AQI) is expected to reach the Red or Unhealthy category. * WHERE...West central, east central, central, south central, southwest, southeast, north central, northwest, and northeast Minnesota. * WHEN...Until noon CDT Monday. * IMPACTS...Some members of the general public may experience health effects. Sensitive groups, such as people with lung disease (including asthma), heart disease, and children and older adults, may experience health effects. * ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Surface high pressure will camp out over the region through Friday evening and will result in light winds and poor dispersion. Smoke with widespread red/unhealthy air quality index (AQI) concentrations will likely remain over most of the state through tonight and into the day Saturday. Winds will increase out of the south over the weekend as high pressure drifts east of the area. Smoke concentrations should gradually decline starting Saturday, but the clearing of the smoke may be slow with smoke spreading as far south as Tennessee and Missouri. Orange AQIs (unhealthy for sensitive groups) could hang on through Sunday and into the day Monday. Most of the alert-level smoke should push north back into Canada by later Monday.
