Areas

Great Salt Lake Desert and Mountains; Tooele and Rush Valleys

Note

Description

At 1228 PM MDT, Doppler radar was tracking a strong thunderstorm near Grantsville, moving north at 15 mph. HAZARD...Wind gusts up to 50 mph. SOURCE...Radar indicated. IMPACT...Gusty winds could knock down tree limbs and blow around unsecured objects. Locations impacted include... Grantsville. This storm will be capable of producing strong gusty winds on the Great Salt Lake. This will lead to a sudden increase in waves and very choppy waters which will result in hazardous boating conditions. Boaters are urged to seek safe harbor if possible. This includes Interstate 80 in Utah between mile markers 76 and 90.

Instruction

If outdoors, consider seeking shelter inside a building. This storm may intensify, so be certain to monitor local radio stations and available television stations for additional information and possible warnings from the National Weather Service. If on or near the Great Salt Lake, get out of the water and move indoors or inside a vehicle. Remember, lightning can strike out to 10 miles from the parent thunderstorm. If you can hear thunder, you are close enough to be struck by lightning. Move to safe shelter now! Do not be caught on the water in a thunderstorm.

Areas

Manti National Forest; Central Utah Mountains; Color Country Mountains

Note

Description

* AFFECTED AREA...Fire Weather Zone 488 Manti National Forest, Fire Weather Zone 493 Central Utah Mountains and Fire Weather Zone 496 Color Country Mountains. * THUNDERSTORMS...Scattered thunderstorms are expected to develop after noon today. These storms will be a mix of dry and wet, but exceptionally dry fuels in the area will allow for favorable conditions for lightning ignitions. * OUTFLOW WINDS...Gusty and erratic outflow winds up to 40-50 mph are expected, with a 10 percent chance of exceeding 55 mph. * IMPACTS...Critical fire weather conditions are expected. New fire starts are possible from lightning, and gusty outflow winds in the vicinity of new and existing fires may lead to rapid fire spread.

Instruction

A Red Flag Warning means that critical fire weather conditions are either occurring now...or are imminent. A combination of lightning...dry fuel conditions...and gusty microburst winds will create favorable conditions for new fire starts and extreme fire behavior.
